About this Notice
The LocalSpots Privacy Notice (the “Notice”) explains how we process your personal data when you use the LocalSpots application (the “App”) and our website, localspots.io. LocalSpots is an app for exploring places and creating itineraries in the cities we cover.
The App is developed by a team of individuals. For the purpose of data protection laws, the controller's email address: privacy@localspots.io.
This Notice forms part of our Terms of Service. Some services the App relies on, such as Apple and Google sign-in, have their own privacy policies, which govern their own processing of your data. For any questions, including how to use your rights under Section 6, write to privacy@localspots.io.
1.Personal data we process
This section explains what data we process, where it comes from, why we use it and on what legal basis. We only process what we need to run LocalSpots.
Purposes of processing, personal data collected, source and legal basis:
| Purpose | Personal data collected | Source | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Create and manage your account, so you can save favourites and create an itinerary | Apple or Google account ID and verified provider email when supplied, or your email address and a password hash for email sign-in. Verification and reset codes are stored as short-lived hashes | From Apple or Google when you sign in, or from you when you create an email account | Performance of a contract |
| Create your itinerary and keep it on all your signed-in phones | Start and end pins, addresses you save and the names you give them, interest tags, favourites, place choices, the start pin and arrival time of a One spot search with the places you like or choose in it, and the resulting itineraries | From you, in the App | Performance of a contract |
| Plan trips together and send trip notifications | Trip names, membership, activity, reactions, shared searches and choices, notification preferences and push tokens. Trip members see each other’s account email and the trip’s full itineraries, including pins. Individual matching swipes stay private. Anyone holding a public trip link can see its places, descriptions and times, but not its pins, dates or members | From you and the other trip members, in the App | Performance of a contract |
| Manage access and the daily allowance, keep the service secure and fix problems | Device platform, app version, last activity and access tokens, plus server logs of IP address, time, requested path and, when you are signed in, a device ID | Collected from your device | Legitimate interest |
| Find and fix crashes in the App | Crash and error reports: device model, operating system and app version, the error and the App’s steps before it, with web addresses cut to their page names. No account, email, IP address, trip or invite codes, or places | Collected from your device when the App crashes or hits an error | Legitimate interest |
| Sell extra uses in the App | The pack you buy, Apple’s transaction ID, purchase date, whether it was a test purchase and any refund. Apple takes the payment. We never see your payment details | From Apple, when you buy in the App | Performance of a contract |
| Find places on the map | Map search text passes through our API to Google Cloud to find matching places in our inventory. Address search and Google place search text pass through our API to Google Maps Platform. We use the text for that request and never store it, log it or add it to your profile | From you, in the App | Performance of a contract |
| Review places you suggest | The Google Maps link you share (one place or a list), or the Google place you pick in search with the reasons you tick, and its place details. When you suggest while signed in to the App, the suggestion is linked to your account and the curator sees its email, and a place you pick in search is added to your own map, visible only to you. Suggestions made with an invite code aren’t linked to anyone, though a list link itself may identify its owner | From you, via Suggest a place | Performance of a contractSteps taken at your request |
| Send marketing emails about LocalSpots and new cities | Email address, marketing choice and when you opted in | From you, via the Marketing emails switch in the App (Profile → Communication) or the box on the waitlist form | ConsentBoth are off until you choose them. Withdraw any time in Profile → Communication, through the unsubscribe link or by email. Messages about your account, such as verification codes, continue. |
| Draft a day inside an AI assistant | No account is required. The connector uses your chosen pins, date, times and interest tags once to compose and return the draft, without storing or logging those inputs or creating an account, trip or itinerary row. We retain daily draft counts by assistant name and token-spend records, never pins | From the assistant request | Performance of a contractProviding the draft you request |
| Measure visits to the landing page | Google Analytics cookies (_ga, _ga_*) and visit data |
From your browser, only if you choose Accept in the cookie banner | ConsentWithdraw any time under Cookie settings in the landing page footer. |
Location on your phone. The App requests location access while you use it, on the map’s first open or when you tap Locate me. Your position stays on your phone to move the map, show the blue dot, choose a city and prefill a start pin inside that city. If you use that pin, it is sent as an ordinary start point, without identifying it as your device’s position. There is no background location tracking.
What we don’t collect. We don’t ask for your name. Email signup requires a password, which we store only as a scrypt hash. We never store its plain text. There is no free-text trip brief: you tap the map and pick from fixed choices. A start pin may be your hotel or home, so choose it with that in mind. Your language, theme and city choices stay on your phone. localspots.io sets no cookies unless you accept analytics, and keeps your cookie choice in your browser’s local storage. The App has no analytics. The only report it sends us on its own is a crash or error report, described above. Google’s map and sign-in software may collect usage and diagnostic data under Google’s own policies.
Legal bases. We rely on the following:
- Performance of a contract. What we need to provide the App you asked for, including steps you ask us to take before you sign up. Without this data we can’t provide the service.
- Legitimate interest. Our interest in keeping the service secure and working, balanced against your privacy. You can object to this processing (Section 6).
- Consent. For marketing emails and website analytics. You can withdraw consent at any time, without affecting processing that took place before.
2.Duration of processing
Data retention. We keep your data for these periods:
- Account data (email, password hash where applicable, favourites, saved addresses, places on your own map, interest tags, itineraries, extra uses, marketing choice): until you delete your account. Verification and reset codes expire after 15 minutes. Failed sign-in and per-IP counters use one-hour windows. To prevent repeated account creation from resetting allowances, we retain a keyed account pseudonym and abuse counters for up to 25 hours after account deletion. They contain no email, provider subject, itineraries or purchased balance.
- Shared trips: until the organiser deletes the trip. Deleting your account removes your membership and email, while the trip remains for its other members.
- Google-derived directions between stops: seven days.
- Purchases: Apple’s transaction ID, the pack and its dates stay after you delete your account, no longer linked to you, so the same purchase can’t be credited twice.
- Analytics data: for the retention period set in our Google Analytics account.
- Crash and error reports: 30 days.
- Suggested places: until the curator adds or dismisses them. Deleting your account removes the link between a suggestion and you.
Exceptions. We keep data longer only where the law requires it, to evidence our compliance with the law, or while an issue, claim or dispute about it is unresolved.
Deleting your account. You may delete your account in Profile → Account. Delete account removes your email, favourites, personal itineraries, unused extra uses and other account data, and signs out every phone signed into the account. Trips with other members remain for them, with another member becoming the organiser. We also attempt to revoke Apple’s refresh token. The short-lived abuse counters described above and unlinked purchase/refund records remain for their stated purposes. Deleting the App doesn’t delete your account.
3.Cross-border transfer and location of processing
Location of servers. Our servers, database and logs are hosted on Google Cloud in the Netherlands. Crash and error reports are stored by Sentry in Germany. Some of our service providers (Section 4) may process data in other countries, including the United States.
For EU and UK residents
Cross-border data transfer. Where your data leaves the EEA or the UK for a country without an adequate level of protection, the transfer relies on (i) the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and its UK Extension, (ii) the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, with the UK Addendum where relevant, or (iii) European Commission adequacy decisions or UK adequacy regulations.
4.Data recipients
We use the following services. Apple services are provided by Apple Inc. (USA) or its affiliates. Google services may be provided by Google Ireland Limited (Ireland), Google LLC (USA) or another Google affiliate.

5.Children’s privacy
Age restriction. LocalSpots is for people aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18.

You have the right to:

- Rectification. Ask us to correct or complete inaccurate data.
- Erasure. Ask us to delete your data. You can also delete your account yourself (Section 2.3).
- Restriction. Ask us to limit how we use your data, for example while you contest its accuracy.

- Withdraw consent. At any time, for marketing emails or analytics, without affecting earlier processing.
- Complaint. Complain to the Dutch Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, the data protection authority where you live or work in the EU, or, in the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office.
- Portability. Receive the data you gave us in a structured, machine-readable format, or have it sent to another provider, where we process it based on contract or consent.
How to use your rights. Write to privacy@localspots.io. We respond within one month. For complex or numerous requests we may extend this by two months, and we will tell you why within the first month.
7.Third-party websites
The App and localspots.io may link to websites and services run by others, which we don’t control. Their own privacy policies apply there, not this Notice.
8.Data protection and security
We use commercially reasonable technical and organisational safeguards to protect your data and review them regularly. Access tokens and request contents, including the pins you choose, are not logged.
9.Changes to this Notice
Reasons for updates. We update this Notice and its effective date when our data practices or the law change.
Communication on updates. If a change is significant, we will tell you by email or in the App before it takes effect.
